How to disable Messenger Service Popups

By Tobias Quosigk

Messenger Service Popup

Messenger Service Popups are harmless windows (see illustration above) that display text messages on your screen. Contrary to the similarity in names, this is a system service and not related to MSN MessengerTM. The culprit exploits this service built into Windows 2000/ XP whose main task is to transmit "Alert messages" from a server to client computer in a corporate network (for example, a network administrator could send a message to all users on the network informing them of server maintenance).

This service is irrelevant to 99% of home users, even if you have multiple computers networked in your house.

There are two ways to stop Messenger Service Popups:

  • Disable the service
  • Install a hardware and/or software firewall

To Disable the service

  1. Right-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop or Start Menu and left-click on Manage.

The Computer Management window will open.

  2. Click on the "+" sign in front of Services and Applications to expand the listing.

  3. Click on Services.

  4. In the right part of the window a listing of services should appear.

  5. Scroll down the list until you find

  6. Right-click on that line and choose Properties.

  7. A windows titled Messenger Properties (Local Computer) will open.

  8. Choose Manual from the Startup Type list.

  9. In the Service Status section, click the Stop button.

  10. Click Apply, then OK.

  11. Close the Computer Management window.

  12. Pat yourself on the back. You have successfully shut down Messenger Service.
